Dutch Footballer of the Year (Voetballer van het Jaar) / Golden Shoe (Gouden Schoen)
The Gouden Schoen (Golden Shoe) has been awarded since 1982 by reporters of Dutch newspaper
De Telegraaf and leading footy magazine Voetbal International. Also awarded from 1984 was
the Netherlands Footballer of the Year, which was awarded at the annual footballers union
gala (the VVCS Gala). Both awards were open to any nationality of player currently plying
their trade in the Dutch league. In 2006 both awards merged into the Gouden Schoen, awarded
at the glitzy VVCS gala. And if 2006 was anything to go by it's the sort of awards we want
to see more of - award winner Dirk Kuyt dragged onto stage to perform a duet of the Dutch
classic 'As the Night Disappears' with legendary Dutch singer Jan Smit (that's John Smith to us).
