2002 - Hartlepools New Mayor
In 2002 the Hartlepool Utd's mascot H'Angus the Monkey was elected mayor of Hartlepool. Disappointingly, it wasn't H'Angus who was actually elected, but fan Stuart Drummond, the man in the monkey outfit. He was elected using "free bananas for schoolchildren" as one of his main promises. despite initially going for election "just for a laugh, and as a publicity stunt" he started to take the job seriously and has since been re-elected.
