If midfield dynamo's eyebrows had been slowly risen when Sven-Goran Eriksson signed-on for League 2 outfit
Notts County in the summer of 2009, they were positively leaping around and dancing on it's wig when Sol Campbell
announced that he too was joining the club, a month after his contract with Premier League Portsmouth had expired.
The club's new Middle Eastern owners had stated their intent to get out of the division by making a number of
signings, but nothing like this. The most surprsing part of the deal was the length of the contract - 5 years.
Not bad at all for a defender only 3 weeks away from his 35th birthday.
"This is the best club for me where I am at the moment in my life" said Sol after signing on the dotted line,
before marching the club's mysterious new owners to the nearest cash machine to withdraw the first of his his
reported 40,000 smackers a week. Less than two hundred grand and one league game later and Sol was off ! A torrid
afternoon at Morecambe resulted in a 2-1 defeat on the 19th September and was followed just 3 days later by
Campbell walking out on the club. His contract was cancelled by mutual consent on the following day, the 23rd
September.
