Never a football club for fake drama, Real Madrid has been on a talent-signing frenzy recently. The Spanish team not only wants to compete, they want to annihilate the competition. And most of England’s clubs are all too happy to give way to the Spanish currency and release their players. Maybe their money smells better? It has more flavor, si? It must be the olive oil.
Madrid made big waves when they struck at the heart and soul of jolly old England, signing Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo to a very lucrative deal. The Spaniards are at it again, targeting Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso – Merseyside’s favorite midfielder.
Alonso, once perched high atop a fence of nonchalant ambiguity, now wants the clubs to make up their respective minds as to his future. Will it be fish and chips in one of Liverpool’s finest pubs, or paella on the coast of Spain? The clock is ticking…
Xabi recently handed in a transfer request at Anfield, and reportedly remained in Spain after the friendly Sunday match
featuring Liverpool in a whimsically wonderful and wonky match against Espanyol. And while it could be possible that Alonso got his
hands on a list of Barcelona’s

and went on a blackjack bender, it’s far more likely that he’s getting used to the sights and sounds of Spain.
Christian Purslow, Liverpool’s managing director, met with Jose Angel of Madrid on Sunday to discuss Alonso and his possible move; however, no agreement was made. Teammates, fans, and Rafael Benitez, manager of Liverpool FC, all want Alonso to stay. But if Madrid has proven anything, it’s that they’re the real deal when it comes to throwing money at players. The point: money talks, star players walk.
The meek may truly be set to inherit the Earth, but footballers are trying to purchase it outright.
As it stands now, Alonso is throwing back a pint and having his Liverpool uniform washed and ironed, but that’s not any sure sign the 28-year-old star will remain faithful. Real Madrid usually gets what Real Madrid wants.
