2006 Tips for the future
Starting XI Here's our team from the 12 players that we've tipped during 2006...
G.Higuin K.J. Huntelaar
R.Quaresma Y.Gourcuff A.Aquilani V.Bystrov
M.Kadlac V.Kompany G.Cabral D.Alves
I.Akinfeev
Sub: G.Dos Santos

December
Name: Giovanni dos Santos
Country: Mexico
Club: Barcelona (Spain)
Age: 17 (11-05-1989)
Position: Midfield/Forward
Attacking midfield playmaker, already tagged as 'the new Ronaldinho'. Brazilian father, Mexican mother, he opted for the latter and starred in the 2005 World U17 Champs as Mexico beat Brazil to win the title. Moved to Barca in his early teens and is now knocking on the door of the senior squad for both club and country.

November
Name: Michael Kadlac
Country: Czech Republic
Club: Sparta Prague
Age: 21 (13-12-1984)
Position: Left Back
The son of a former Czech international, Kadlac is a classy left back who's forward bursts and tough tackling have apparently gone down a treat in the Strachan household over in Glasgow, with the Scottish champions thought to be pondering a new year bid.

October
Name: Gustavo Cabral
Country: Argentina
Club: Racing Club
Age: 20 (14-10-1985)
Position: Centre Half
Tough tackling Argentinian centre half who reads the game well and who's distribution is second to none. Has been compared to Roberto Ayala, and why not. Seems only a matter of time before he makes the move to Europe, with Spain looking the most likely destination if reports are to be believed.

September
Name: Igor Akinfeev
Country: Russia
Club: CSKA Moscow
Age: 20 (08-04-1986)
Position: Goalkeeper
A true boy wonder, Akinfeev made his debut for CSKA aged 17, and for the national team only a year later. Coached by 80's legend Rinat Dasaev, Akinfeev is a terrific shot stopper who commands the box with real authority.

August
Name: Vladimir Bystrov
Country: Russia
Club: Spartak Moscow
Age: 22 (31-01-1984)
Position: Winger
A product of St Petersburg's famous footballing academy, Bystrov moved to Spartak Moscow in 2005 and hasn't looked back since. He's got pace to burn and his dribbling is so good that he's now the most fouled player in the Russian league. Made his debut for national team aged only 20 and also made the Euro 2004 squad in the same year. He's all set to terrorise Champion League defences this autumn.

July
Name: Alberto Aquilani
Country: Italy
Club: Roma
Age: 21 (07-07-1984)
Position: Midfielder
Italian U21 international midfielder. Cult figure amongst the Roma fans for his goal against arch rivals Lazio, Aquilani is a busy midfielder with a decent all round game, always looking to receive the ball and pass it on, and not afraid to get stuck in.

June
Name: Gonzalo Higuin
Country: Argentina/France
Club: River Plate
Age: 18 (10-12-1987)
Position: Midfielder
Made a big impact for River since making his debut last year. Became a firm favourite after scoring a brace against deadly rivals Boca. River have reportedly sold 50% of his contract to investment group MSI. He has all the attributes required for a top player - big and strong, but agile and with an eye for goal. Holds a French passport as he was born there whilst his Argentinian dad was playing in France. He recently turned down the chance to join Argentina's U20 squad in order to keep his options open.

May
Name: Yoann Gourcuff
Country: France
Club: AC Milan
Age: 19 (11-07-1986)
Position: Midfielder
Classy French playmaker who has inevitably been dubbed 'the new Zidane', well actually he's been dubbed 'the little Zidane', due to his size. Always eager to get forward, he possesses great technical skills and a wide range of passing.

April
Name: Daniel Alves
Country: Brazil
Club: Sevilla
Age: 22 (06-05-1983)
Position: Right Back
Anyone who has seen Sevilla in La Liga this season will surely have noticed the guy roaring up and down the right flank like a winger. This is Daniel Alves. And not only does he attack like a demon, he can defend as well. Has dual Brazilian and Spanish nationality but has represented Brazil in the 2003 World Youth Champs. He has recently been linked with a move to Rafa Benitez's Liverpool.

March
Name: Vincent Kompany
Country: Belgium
Club: Anderlecht
Age: 19 (10-04-1986)
Position: Centre Back
A long time target of Europe's biggest clubs, Anderlecht have so far managed to resist their advances but for how long ? His strength, power and size make him a real defensive barrier.

February
Name: Ricardo Quaresma
Country: Portugal
Club: Porto
Age: 22 (26-09-1983)
Position: Winger
Sublimely-skilled winger who can play on either flank. Started out at Sporting Lisbon with Cristiano Ronaldo before transferring to Barcelona. However, he didn't settle with Frank Rijkaard and was transferred to Porto with Deco going the other way. His defensive work may be poor but his dribbling is awesome and his trademark crosses (outside of the right foot) very hard to deal with.

January
Name: Klaas Jan Huntelaar
Country: Holland
Club: SC Heerenveen
Age: 22 (12-08-1983)
Position: Striker
Tipped as Holland's next superstar striker, Huntelaar is a fantastic finisher who has all the key attributes to make it at the highest level - strength, determination, pace and skill. Looks likely to sign for Ajax, although a number of other top European clubs are said to have been watching him.
