The Bourne Ultimatum (DVD) |
|
Saw it on the big screen last year and it doesn't disappoint on the small screen either. Phenomenal pace from start to finish,
and what about that car chase in New York ? No wonder he was struggling to walk afterwards.

Miami Vice (Sky) |
|
I'm not sure if was just me and my wife, or possibly our tv, but the sound on this film
makes it almost unwatchable. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx just seem to mumble their way
through it, and you spend half the time trying to piece together what they're on about.
I might sound like my dad but Colin Farrell should spend a little less time worrying about
trying to look cool with the handlebar 'tache and a lot more time on bloody well
speaking clearly! You can pretty much guess the plot as well (cops go undercover to try
and smash drug ring etc etc). If you do get it out on dvd and it has a subtitle option
then I suggest you whack them on.

Inland Empire (Cinema) |
|
I'm sure some people will give this a 5 out 5 or a 10 out of 10, but after a hard week at
work I was needing something easy going, one thing I wouldn't describe this film as.
It's by David Lynch and if you've seen some of his other stuff (e.g. Mulholland Drive)
and struggled with it then this could drive you barmy. Its 3 hours of strangeness, with
characters changing into different characters, and time swapping around here and there
as the film dives in and out of strange little worlds. It would have probably made
more sense after several large glasses of Erdinger. Might watch it again on DVD and
re-review it.

V for Vendetta (DVD) |
|
The idea has kind of been done before with 1984 and Brazil (surely a contender for a 5/5
rating) but this isn't a bad effort at all. It follows the classic formula where a
downtrodden everyman is abused by The State which inadvertently turns him into a
rebel/superhero figure. John Hurt is quality as the mad Hitler/Thatcher style leader and
Hugo Weaving does a good job as the masked V. The only downside is Natalie Portman's
terrible British accent. Well worth a watch. Rating: 4/5

Hot Fuzz (Cinema) |
|
Written by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright (the guys behind Shaun of the Dead), its basically a British
comedy/action movie. Got plenty of laughs at the start, which is always a good sign, as Pegg's
cop character is booted out of London for being too good at his job. He turns up in a sleepy
south-west town and is left despairing at the lack of action and his un-professional new
colleagues. Pegg, as ever, is mint, and their are plenty of laughs from Nick Frost, Jim Broadbent
and, best of all, ex-Bond Timothy Dalton, brilliant as the local Supermarket owner.
It tends to swap the comedy for action towards the end, but its still a fine watch.

The Prestige (Cinema) |
|
Another cracking film from Chris Nolan (the man behind the superb Memento and Batman Begins).
Starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as 2 Victorian magicians who become obsessed with
outdoing and sabotaging each other's illusions. There's a real tension running throughout the
film and its well worth a 4 out of 5 rating. Michael Caine, David Bowie and Scarlett Johansson
all crop up, with Bowie suprisingly good for once.

Casino Royale (Cinema) Rating: 9/10 |
| A definite raspberry to all those who doubted Daniel Craig's credentials. Pierce who ? |
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (Cinema) Rating: 9/10 |
| There's not many times men come out of cinemas admitting they were in tears,
but this is one of them. Some inspired set pieces. Special mention has to go to the hotel reception scene immediately after Borat
has learnt how to speak hip-hop. |

The Departed (Cinema) Rating: 8/10 |
|
Scorsese returns to top form with another gangland classic, this one set in the Irish-American
underworld of Boston. Matt Damon and Di Caprio both star as moles in their respective enemies -
the police and the gangs. And Mark Wahlberg is suprisingly good as a foul mouthed detective.
But Nicholson steals the show as crimelord Frank Costello.

Children of Men (Cinema) Rating: 8/10 |
|
Moral tale (basically war and people are stupid) of Britain set in 2027.
No children have been born for nearly 2 decades and the country is on the verge of total
collapse. Its really pretty moving, and Clive Owen is quality yet again.

with action from start to finish.

Syriana (DVD) Rating: 8/10 |
|
Complex, sometimes confusing, film about the oil situation in the Middle East.
Its not an action movie, but a slow burnring, thought provoker.
George Clooney and Matt Damon are both excellent in the main roles.
Its one of those films you could do with watching a few times, to really get to the bottom of some of the bits.

Walk the Line (DVD) 7/10 |

Some cracking acting by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as the legendary Johny Cash
and June Carter. Phoneix is absolutely immense and even if you're not a massive Cash fan
its still a pretty good watch.

Munich |
|
Eight out of ten for Spielberg with this one.
Set after the murder of 9 Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics in 1972,
the film is based on real events about what happened next... Namely, Israel seeking out
those responsible and handing out some brutal retaliation. Its not easy going, and their a
are plenty of uncomrtable bits, but it all makes for a really decent film.

A Cock And Bull Story |
|
A film about the making of a film. Steve Coogan plays Steve Coogan, and if you're a fan of his then there's good
chance you'll find yourself laughing out loud throughout.
Rob Brydon and Gillian Anderson are both in excellent form as well.
