Forget the 9 million big ones that old Sven has just wasted on untested Italian
Rolando Bianchi, back in 1986 Graham Turner thought he was gambling when he handed
65 grand in used fivers to arch rivals West Brom for an unknown local lad
called Steve Bull. 300 goals later it had become one of the greatest transfers ever.

Obituary - Hugh Johns (1922-2007)
Hugh Johns died recently aged 84. Johns, for those of us brought up in the ATV region, was the
voice of ITV football in the pre-live era. His voice was his main strength. A smooth, mellow
flow could always make the drabbest of encounters seem better than it actually was. Johns was
the voice of ITV's football commentary for the 1966 and 1970 World Cups, but his comments on
Hurst's third goal ("Here's Hurst. He might make it three. He has! He has! So that's it!"),
were largely forgotten when compared with Wolstenholme's famous words on BBC. As the 70s wore
on he increasingly lost out on the premium games to his friend Brian Moore and left ATV's
flagship Star Soccer programme to semi-retirement with occasional work for HTV Wales in 1982.
His occasional gaffes, "The crowd urges the referee to look at his whistle and blow his watch",
were memorable. So was the nearest thing he had to a catchphrase, which he would gleefully
announce after the opening scorers name ("Ian Wallace! One Nothing!). Hugh Johns always
seemed a true gentleman on the occasional TV appearances he made in later life and sadly for us
nostalgic, another small part of our football heritage is no more.

4:1, 6:1, 6:0, 4:0. They may not have been exactly close games, but some of the
football played in the quarter finals of the Copa America was electric, and some of the goals
were absolutely mint.

Pacy defender who has previously captained the England Under-18 team, and has also played for the
Under-19s. Unlike many other defenders who, by the look of fear on their faces, appear to be
bringing a ball of stinking Dutch cheese out of defence, Mancienne has that invaluable asset of
looking composed and assured when he approaches the halfway line. He spent mosy of last season
on loan at QPR, where his displays at right back made him popular with the Loftus Road faithful.
